Newspaper reporters have a hard time resisting "ride-along" stories, whether it's in a police car or paramedic truck -- or an Amtrak train. Which is why an Amtrak engineer was able to get badly needed publicity about the dangers of walking near train tracks.
A San Francisco Chronicle reporter rode with the engineer, Kevin Gniadek, and got a real-world view from the cab on the Amtrak train:
Shortly after Gniadek pulled out from the Richmond Amtrak Station, a man was spotted walking just to the right of the tracks, never flinching as the engineer honked his horn several times.
I think reporters should really try it themselves before they can say something about its safety. Your story will not be that reliable when you don't experience it yourself. You should try it and not just interview people who have tried.

Train safety should be made more public, I don't think kids realise the dangers of crossing trainlines, I also down thing they realise just how dangerous it is to put our heads out of the windows. Where would we stand insurance wise if anything was to happen?

I couldn't agree more. The children may well be imitating the ones they always see, especially if they find it exciting.
